What are design rules and why we need them?

Process-specific design rules include various physical design constraints (including spatial rules and connectivity-based checks) which are considered to meet the anticipated performance requirement.

It is done to avoid any manufacturing defects during the fabrication process and to increase yield. Violating a design rule might result in a non-functional circuit (or) low yield.
