What is the history of layout design?

In the early days, IC layouts were hand-drawn with pencils on a gridded mylar sheet (polyester film made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) by putting together a set of polygons.

The originals were made by transferring the drawing from mylar to rubylith and later masks were developed from rubylith original using photographic reduction.
